Travelling to the Costa Brava.

Traveling to the Costa Brava has become easier and much more efficient. Currently, there are now more flights to the region compared to before, and this includes several low-cost operators. The Costa Brava is easily accessible from anywhere in Europe. By air, it is not more than two hours away from most of the major European cities. Costa Brava has one major airport, Girona, right at its very heart.

Airport Girona

First, here is a small explanation about the spelling of Girona. We are keeping here the Catalan spelling, but in Spanish it is spelled Gerona. The complete name of the airport is Girona-Costa Brava.

Girona Airport is in northeast Spain, 12 kilometers outside the city of Girona and 100 kilometers from Barcelona.  It is an important airport for tourists that want to go to Costa Brava or Barcelona, and it is also the entrance to the Pyrenees to the north of Girona. Especially thanks to the arrival of the Irish budget company Ryanair in 2003, the importance of Girona has increased. Ryanair uses Girona as a junction for connections all over Europe. Girona Airport has no rail connection, but it is possible to travel by bus or taxi to Girona and take a train from there to Barcelona or to main resorts on the Costa Brava, & Andorra.

To reach one of the popular seaside resorts at the Costa Brava, you can take a Sarfa bus in Girona: e taxi rank is directly outside the arrivals Terminal. There is a blue and white sign saying ‘Taxi’ and the word ‘taxi’ is also painted in yellow on the road.

The counters of four car rental companies can be found in the Arrivals Hall: Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Atesa , Goldcar Europe and Auriga. Or book your car online at EasyTerra Car Rental. BarcelonaAirport

If a ticket to Barcelona is cheaper than to Girona airport than this a good option. Travelling from Barcelona-Airport to Girona is quite simple. First check whether the coach from the airport is running when you arrive. However, if not, a train journey from Barcelona city centre runs on a regular basis and is, in fact, cheaper than the coach.

By coach

Fortunately, there is a coach that leaves directly from Barcelona Airport and goes to the centre of Girona – the Rápid aeroport Bus provided by the ALSA bus company.

There are only three coaches that run each day - one in the morning, one in the afternoon and one in the late evening. It is possible to buy both a single and a return ticket – the single is approximately 20 euros and the return is approximately 35 euros.

In Terminals B and C on the ground floor you can find counters for car rental companies such as: Avis, Atesa, Alamo, Europcar and Hertz. You can also rent a car in advance using the car rental service EasyTerra provides, they compare the rates of several rental car providers in a single quote.

Interurban service for the Costa Brava and l'Alt i Baix Empordà regions.

Sarfa (part of the Sarbus group) runs a regular interurban service for the Costa Brava and l'Alt i Baix Empordà regions. The three main lines are:

*          Sant Feliu de Guíxols – Castell Platja d’Aro S’Agaró – Santa Cristina

*          Castell Platja d’Aro S’Agaró – Santa Cristina – Sant Feliu de Guíxols

*          Palamós - Calonge

Sagalés buses connect a number of coastal towns including Tossa de Mar, Lloret de Mar, Blanes, Malgrat de Mar, Santa Susanna, Pineda de Mar and Calella de la Costa. The website has an interactive map and timetable search in English.
