Torroella de Montgri and L'estartit are a History Buff and Diver's Paradise.

Torroella de Montgri was once a royal town and is easy to spot, given its enormous 13th century castle on the Montgri massif, built as an outpost by Jaume II to keep the quarreling Counts of Emporda in line. A little over three miles from the sea, the town is surrounded by walls from an old Roman defensive line, remains of which can still be seen. The town also boasts a Renaissance tower and gates, an arcaded Placa de la Vila and the 14th -century Gothic gem that is the church of St. Genis. There is an Augustinian monastery with a Tuscan-Renaissance style cloister the likes of which cannot be seen anywhere in Catalonia. And a Renaissance mansion in the heart of the old town is home to the Museu de Mediterrania.

The town also hosts an annual international music festival as well as live jazz programming during summer months.

Torroella’s seaside extension, L’Estartit, boasts a beautiful coastline with one of the longest sandy beaches on the Costa Brava, replete with rocky coves and inlets and spectacular coastal paths. But its claim to fame is among divers, who come from afar to relish the natural wonders of the seven picturesque Illes Medes that float a mile off the coast. Used centuries ago as a pirate base, the marine life surrounding the islands is some of the richest in the western Mediterranean. Breathtaking coral formations, colored seaweeds, starfish, octopus, lobster and miniature brightly colored underwater forests of over 600 species of fauna delight the aquatically inclined and provide plentiful larder for the thousands of yellow-legged gulls, shags and cormorants that populate the islands. For the non-aquatically inclined, there are glass bottom boat cruises and kayak tours. Also on the natural wonders front, the nearby protected Bais Emporda wetlands are home to numerous species of reptiles, amphibians, fish and birds.

L’Estartit is essentially a family resort and its nightlife reflects this fact. There are some lively bars with music and a couple of discos but no all-night venues. The music bars and clubs remain open until the early hours but not until dawn. Much of the entertainment in L’Estartit is hotel based with live shows. Families enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the waterfront restaurants. Other leisure activities include cycling, tennis and horseback riding while the nearest golf course is a ten minute drive away.
