Begur is a haven of spectacolor beaches.

The Costa Brava’s reputation as a throbbing, spring break type destination has, in fact, proved to preserve the seclusion of some of its more pristine treasures. The Cap de Begur is a case in point. Just 40 minutes from Girona, it is a haven of spectacular beaches and lovely whitewashed fishing villages in addition to exceptional sporting and cultural attractions.

Summers in Begur are distinctly mild rather than suffocatingly hot. White, sandy beaches alternate amidst jutting cliffs and clear azure coves, while along the coast, pines, cork oaks and fields of wildflowers give way to the looming vista of the Pyrenees. Visitors can wander the GR92 path from Calella de Palafrugell north to secluded Llafranc, with its laid-back bars and cafes. From Llafranc, the path continues to the Cap de Sant Sebastia where the Far de Sant Sebastia, a magnificent lighthouse built in 1857, offers stunning panoramic views.

Medieval villages dominate the landscape just inland between Begur and Girona, where zoning laws have kept sprawl at bay. The striking fortification of Pals was nearly destroyed in the Civil War but has since been meticulously restored. The historically important town of La Bisbal attracts with a Romanesque castle that is now home to the Baix Emporda historical archive. La Bisbal is also known for its centuries old ceramics trade. Just north is the ancient Iberian settlement of Ullastret, containing the remains of homes, canals and a village square.

Begur is also a short distance from a rich array of other Catalan cultural experiences, including nearby Figueres, the birthplace of Dali and home to the Teatre-Museu Dali, as well as the bijou art colony of Cadaques, the Romanesque ruins of the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes and the Greco-Roman ruins of Empuries overlooking the Gulf of Roses.

Water sports are a popular pastime at Begur, with visitors flocking to the breathtaking protected marine reserve of Illes Medes just north at L’Estartit. There are also several excellent golf courses nearby including Pals, occasional host of the Spanish Open. Inland is Girona with its astonishing Gothic cathedral. Barcelona is just a day trip away. And if you are inclined to reserve a table a year in advance, Ferran Adria’s El Bulli in Montjol, considered, perhaps, the world’s best restaurant, just might indulge you.
